I will have a big new story on the April elections coming out in the next week, so make sure to keep an eye out for that. Until then...

- Last week's Webster-Kirkwood Times:
- On pg. 1, news of the formation of a new committee to explore the future of Kirkwood Water. The Republican-dominated Council has been telegraphing its desire to privatize city services for a while now, and it seems like it's finally found a vehicle for doing so.
- On pg. 4, there's a nice write-up of the Public Works site proposal. The article pays special attention to concerns regarding flooding on the site. It's worth mentioning that, of the proposals submitted, Savoy's seemed to most closely integrate the site's hydrological features into their plans.
- On pg. 8, a great overview of the four candidates running for the three Council seats up for grabs in the April election. Of the four, Al Rheinnecker is the lone incumbent.
- A few items of import from tonight's City Council meeting agenda:
- As mentioned earlier, City Council will vote to approve both the new R-7 multifamily zoning district and Double Eagle's corresponding 200+ apartment Public Works proposal. I think the zoning district adds unnecessary complexity to a code that we should be trying to simplify, and I think the Double Eagle proposal misses the mark on what should have been a transformational project for Downtown Kirkwood, but you already know that. Our only recourse now is the ballot box.
- The Council is once again gearing up to submit a grant application for the overhaul of Argonne. I'm very relieved to see the plan still includes a bike lane, after some discussion by the Council about removing the feature. Still, there are three tweaks that could be made to this project that would make it all that much better.
- Held off the agenda until the 11th hour, an amendment now reveals the official cost of the City Council's decision to force former City Administrator Russ Hawes into early retirement: $32,500 to Colin Baenziger & Associates for "Executive Search Services". Hopefully somebody notified the Council of the unbudgeted expense; wouldn't want another one sneaking by 'em!
