Hi Friends!
Another light week so we'll keep it short. First, a quick note that 751 N. Taylor was demolished on the morning of May 6th. Regardless of what you think that Kirkwood 's ideal historic preservation policy may be —and I hope to have more on what I think it may be soon— it's tremendously sad to see the 1858 home go, not least because it was legitimately quite beautiful. There are moral codes that prevail even where legal ones do not and I take it as some consolation that Mr. and Mrs. Sorkin have been thoroughly named and shamed at every step of the way, although it remains unclear to me whether they experience the emotion as such.

I hope that the counterexample provided by Genna and John Pennington in their preservation of the nearby 1855 Daniel Keith Home—as outined in the WKT just a few pages aftter the demolition story,—serves to demonstrate that the flip side of the Sorkins' selfishness is community, and that the vast majority of Kirkwoodians are still committed to fostering it. John is a partner at Savoy Properties, the developer behind the trio of condo buildings along Madison as well as the 4Hands/Peacemaker project, and I'd be lying if I didn't say it's nice to see the ties between allowing new infill development in Kirkwood and preserving its historic homes so directly rendered.

Just a few very cool events to mention in the Quick Hits...

That's all for this week! Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Braver Angels form, if you're still interested—and especially if you're someone who is skeptical of adding mores to Kirkwood—please, please fill it out! Have a great weekend, everyone!
