Hi Friends,
Happy Juneteenth! Hoping to get something published before the week is out, but until then, lets jump into Quick Hits.
Quick Hits:
  • Tonight's City Council Meeting actually already happened (it was moved to yesterday due to the holiday). I'm writing this Wednesday afternoon, so I won't be able to speak to the results of the various votes that populate the agenda until next week, but a few notes on what issues the Council tackled nonetheless:
    • The Council voted on the ADU proposed for Forrest Ave. If the Council approves of this ADU (as they basically have to by statute, I hope the Council will consider making ADUs a permitted use rather than a special use so as to stop wasting everyone's time with inefficient government and red tape
    • The Council also voted on a zoning text amendment to loosen floor area ratio maximum limits in older homes so as to facilitate second story additions, and the enclosure of porches. It's won't achieve much in terms of attainable housing, but it's also better than nothing and I hope it happens.
  • The most interesting news from last week's Webster-Kirkwood Times was the page 1 story on the coming Great Rivers Greenway feasibility study of a potential bridge to link Kirkwood's Greentree and the County's Unger Park on either side of the Meramec, There is talk of marketing Kirkwood as the "gateway to Missouri trail country," and it's interesting to think about how this fits into that vision.
  • The most exciting new from the week is that Kirkwood will apply for a $5.4 million Safer Streets for All (SS4A) implementation grant to fund numerous traffic calming and sidewalk infill improvements, as well as the burying of electric utility lines on Ann. More on this tomorrow (and we haven't won the grant yet), but a huge shout out to all the elected officials and city staff that facilitated this application, and an especially big shoutout to former council member Kara Wurtz who had the foresight to even ensure that Kirkwood would be eligible for such a grant. Also a shout out to the Safer Streets for Kirkwood folks for advocating for the Ann improvement.
That's it for this week! "Raised on Radio" is the Thursday night concert at Station Plaza tonight from 6:30-9! Talk to you all very soon!
