Hi Friends,
Pretty light news week so just a couple odds and ends and we'll get out of here. I've been promising some feature length pieces forever, but I promise they're coming! On to some quick hits!
Quick Hits:
  • The big news of the week is that Downtown Kirkwood, the organization that runs the Special Business District with funding from its own property tax levy and local business licenses, is seeking a new executive director following the departure of its longtime leader, Donna Poe. I think Poe did a really nice job leading the economic and cultural capital of the community, but I'm also excited to see what sorts of innovations new leadership might bring. In particular, I'm hopeful that the org will take on the mantle of building consensus amongst Downtown business owners in support of returning paid parking to Downtown. If you or anyone you know is interested in the position (which pays $70k per year), you can apply to it (and a whole bunch of other jobs!) here
  • A few items from last week's Webster-Kirkwood Times:
    • On pg. 2, a $10-off Duffy's coupon! I also did not know they had trivia on Thursdays! (The Monday/Tuesday pizza specials are a classic, though)
    • On pg. 4, I'm glad to see outdoor seating was approved by the Council for Napoli Kirkwood with what seems like a reasonable amendment (another win for The James, sorry to the haters!)
    • On pg. 5, a nice piece on the damage some Green Tree Park facilities sustained from soil erosion caused by recent flooding of the Meramec. The city plans to rebuild those facilities on the far side of Marshall Road by the football fields, which seems to make more sense anyway.
    • And finally, there are three nice stories on pg. 18:
      • Tomorrow, Friday, May 30, Kirkwood Library will host its first of four "Memory Cafes" this Summer to help give those suffering from various forms of dementia a place to come socialize. Kudos to the library for realizing the fact that the country as a whole, and Kirkwood in particular, are aging and coming up with programming that reflects that reality.
      • There's also a nice rundown on the effort to restore the cedar shingle roof that originally adorned Frank Lloyd Wright's Kraus House in Ebsworth Park. The home is one of just five FLW structures in the state and it's really cool that it's getting even better!
That's it for this week! More live music (the Jon Bonham Duo) tonight from 5-8pm at 4 Hands. The rest of the events calendar is here. Have a great weekend!
